La Geria: A very picturesque wine-growing region, in the centre of the island. You will see hundreds of little circular hollows in the ground, each with a single green vine in the centre, surrounded by semi-circular walls. The vines are covered with the black picon or lapilli (the black fine volcanic pebbles and stones), which retains moisture overnight and helps in the growth of the vines. The most common grape grown here is the malvasia and there are several Bodegas in the area, where you can sample the final product. |
