PLACES OF INTEREST IN LANZAROTE Page 2 of 3
La Geria La Geria:
A very picturesque wine-growing region, in the centre of the island. You will see hundreds of little circular hollows in the ground, each with a single green vine in the centre, surrounded by semi-circular walls.  The vines are covered with the black picon or lapilli (the black fine volcanic pebbles and stones), which retains moisture overnight and helps in the growth of the vines. The most common grape grown here is the malvasia and there are several Bodegas in the area, where you can sample the final product.

Famara:
The beautiful bay of Famara is a surfers’ paradise.  Its sandy beach with large breakers make Famara the ideal place for water-sports and several world-famous surfers and wind-surfers come here to take advantage of the ideal climate in Lanzarote, especially in the winter months. The village itself (La Caleta de Famara) has plenty of local restaurants and bars.

Teguise:
Capital of the island until 1852, this lovely village was spared by the volcanic eruptions of the early 18th century. It claims to be the oldest Spanish settlement of the Canarian Islands, dating from 1402.
The usually peaceful village gets busy with life every Sunday with the weekly market.

Mirador Del RioMirador Del Rio
Situated on the top of a cliff in the north of the island, it was created by the islands’ famous artist and architect, Cesar Manrique, who is also responsible for the sculptures and Canarian artefacts on display there. The spectacular views over the neighbouring beautiful island of La Graciosa are breathtaking.

Cesar Manrique Foundation:The world famous artist and son of Lanzarote designed and built his beautiful house in Tahiche, on the site of 5 volcanic bubbles and a jameo. On his death in 1992, it was bequeathed to the public. Apart from his private collection of famous art, there you will see his stunning private collection of drawings, paintings (Picasso, Miro, Chillida, Guerrero, Chirino, Sempere, etc ) and ceramics.
